Chapter 18

I had a lot of time to kill before heading to Shane’s, and not a lot to do.

I’d stopped by the Cheddar Haus, but Lois and Jeremy had things under control and basically shooed me out the door.

“You spend enough time here,” Lois admonished me. “Go enjoy your day off.”

Wise words, and I would have loved to have taken them to heart, but it was sort of hard to relax when the guy you were being tasked to find was still very much missing.

So I was sitting on the outside patio at Common Grounds, nursing an iced coffee and scrolling mindlessly on my phone, wishing I had something to occupy my time.

Like work.

I had to admit, it was a weird feeling, wanting to be back at the shop. I’d spent weeks on end being resentful of the job, but now that I had the opportunity to take days off, I actually…missed being there.

But then a voice interrupted my thoughts.

“…all these people drinking coffee when they could be drinking a healthy, nutritious fat-busting shake!”

I swiveled in my chair, and saw Tawny Dahl holding up a phone as she made her way to the outdoor patio. She had an insulated bag slung over her shoulder, and she reached inside to pull out a small plastic container.

“You really need to try this,” she told two older women who were seated at a table. “Shakes for Life has 36 nutrients guaranteed to give you energy and make you burn fat, and it tastes great, too!”

She held out one of the cups and the two women looked at each other.

“Take it!” Tawny practically screamed. “You’ll see! It tastes great and it’s good for you. So much better than coffee!”

One of the women took the cup but she didn’t remove the plastic lid. Tawny reached into her bag for another one.

“I’m okay,” the other woman at the table said. “But thank you.”

“You don’t want one?” Tawny didn’t bother hiding her disbelief, or her disdain. “Can you believe this, folks?” She was talking to her livestream audience now. “There are people in this world who will willingly consume a beverage loaded with pesticides and with no nutritional value rather than try a sample of our delicious shakes.”

She glanced contemptuously at the woman. “What is wrong with people these days? People who make poor life choices, who choose to harm their bodies by ingesting toxic ingredients—”

I stood up. “She doesn’t want it.”

The phone was blocking most of Tawny’s face but I saw her lip curl into a scowl. “Mind your own business,” she growled.

“That seems to be advice you should be taking,” I said, and the two women at the table chuckled.

“This is a free country!” Tawny shouted. “Or at least I thought it was! I can do or say whatever I want. First Amendment, baby. Am I right?” she crowed into her phone.

“This is private property,” I said calmly. “You have no right to come on to this patio and harass customers. “

“Don’t tell me what my rights are!”

I rolled my eyes.
